Vets Now is part of the Vets Now emergency-care provider network (with clinics and hospitals across the UK), set up for out-of-hours pet emergencies and supported by an option for video consultations. In the latest reviews, owners repeatedly mention rapid triage on arrival (including a dog being taken “as soon as we walked in”) and proactive communication (phone updates and being able to call overnight for progress reports). Pricing and value are a major decision factor: one recent reviewer reports a £320 minimum fee plus medication charges and a £35 “admin fee” for insurance claims, while another describes feeling “fear-mongered” into an immediate visit for diarrhoea that their regular vet later judged non-urgent. Staffing levels are also raised by one reviewer who says the clinic seemed understaffed and that on one night there was only one vet on duty.

VetsNow is the only out-of-hours vet in Edinburgh so it’s not like there’s much choice. They see you and your pet swiftly, and they are kind and helpful. But the bill is extortionate - they charge a £320 fee as a minimum and any medications have a fee added to them too. Plus they charge a £35 ‘admin fee’ even if you’re the one dealing with the claim with pet insurance, which I find to be a bit of a rip-off. Eventually I’ll get it back from pet insurance, but I feel for those who don’t have it. Surely what they charge is not reflective of the true cost of things.

Called about my cat because he had diarrhoea but no other symptoms at all. Very hydrated, eating well, cuddly and comfortable as usual but wanted to phone just to be safe. It was new year’s eve at 6pm ish, so our usual vets was closed and not taking any calls. The receptionist was rude and fear mongering. she recommended Arlo get seen immediately despite being completely fine other than diarrhoea. I told her he’s a very anxious cat and bringing him in might just make him worse, she had none of it and firmly suggested we get him in immediately for examination. I was honest and mentioned we didn’t have a way of bringing him in, she was dismissive and suggested getting a taxi. A consultation alone was expensive, nevermind medication they might prescribe, a taxi on top of that is just not something we could afford, she was completely dismissive of this. I told her I would discuss this and call back ans she was quite rude about this and seemingly disapproved. We then managed to get a call back from our usual vets which was reassuring, and they reassured us completely that for an anxious cat this can sometimes be normal and the fact he had no other symptoms they weren’t worried at all and unless he started throwing up or had excessive diarrhoea there was nothing to worry about. This was the complete opposite of what this vet said and I believe it is purely due to being so money focused having read other reviews. Two days later Arlo was back to his normal self completely. This vets caused so much unnecessary worry for our family and they did not have any sympathy for our situation or even for little anxious Arlo, which i’m sure now would have been terrified going to a new place for no reason at all. Having read other reviews regarding money grabbing and general negligence, I would never ever take any of my pets here and i’d suggest you do the same.

The vets and nurses here are fantastic and seem to genuinely care about their work. My cat received great care from them. My only concern is that considering the prices they charge, the seem woefully understaffed here and did so all 3 times we attended. Considering they are an out of hours service I was surprised to find out that the night of 1st January they only had one vet on duty. This clinic is the only emergency option for half of Edinburgh and one vet to manage this seems unreasonable. Overall, great service and staff. But please employ more people and ensure your amazing staff get adequate rest and breaks as it is well deserved.

In what I can only describe as one of the most traumatic things I’ve been through, the full team were amazing. They took my dog out our arms as soon as we walked in there was no delay and the team updated us as soon as they could! I also received a call to update me on how she was doing and they let me call during the night for an update. Honestly the whole team were fantastic and my dog is recovering well.
